Back to School with MomsWrite

10/02/2006 01:14:00 PM

Back to school means: plaid dresses with white collars; white sox and brown leather sandals; a white wool cardigan; plastic pens and pencil holders with a zipper; three-ring notebooks; the luxury of new colored pencils and pens; lunchboxes; the sound of wax paper unwrapping tuna fish sandwiches; apples; raisins; milk in a little cardboard container. And above all, excitement and fear. Hearts pounding; Enormous high ceilings and big desks. Where do I put my cardigan? Where do I put my notebook? Will I sit next to someone I know? Do I know anyone? Scary. Exciting. Like pushing on a canker sore. Feels good. Feels awful. Eeekkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!!

MomsWrite is back in session! Guess what we did our first meeting? All the students brought in school supplies and dumped them in the middle of our writing circle. One student brought Jelly Bellies for all of us. The favorite flavor was lime. We read Barbara Crooker's poem "The Blue Snake Lies Curled in My Bowl Like Oatmeal" and other poems about going back to school. And then we wrote. And then we read. Wow! The variety of writing, the flavor of the language -- they were as varied as the Jelly Bellies.
